What is gynecologic cancer?

Gynecologic cancer is any type of cancer that starts in a woman’s reproductive system. The type of cancer depends on the organ where the cancer begins. Symptoms and risk factors vary depending on the specific type of gynecologic cancer, but early detection and treatment are crucial for improving outcomes. Regular screenings, like Pap smears and HPV testing, can help detect some gynecologic cancers early.

Your Care Team

Our multidisciplinary teams review individual patient cases and discuss treatment plans. The team includes gynecologic oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and a cancer nurse navigator.

Your cancer nurse navigator specializes in women’s cancers and will help guide you if a diagnosis is found. They can help with everything from calling to check in after treatment and answering your calls to connecting you to supportive services that can help you during your cancer journey.

Your dietitian specializes in cancer patients, ensuring that your nutrition plan maximizes your treatment potential. You’ll learn how to make simple changes that improve your quality of life.

Your financial navigator is a social worker who can help you with any financial concerns and address anything that might make it difficult to get care, such as lodging or transportation.

We also offer counselors to support your mental and emotional health throughout your cancer journey.

Treatments We Offer

As knowledge about gynecologic cancer continues to expand, more encouraging treatment options are available now than ever before. Sometimes multiple types of treatments are used to treat cancer. Your care team will help guide you to the best treatment for your cancer.

Treatments include:

  • Radiation therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Immunotherapy
  • Targeted therapy
  • Minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures, including robotic surgery – This approach shortens recovery times, decreases pain and pain medications needed after the operation, requires smaller incisions and reduces the risk of complications.
  • Open surgery – Traditional open gynecologic surgery, using a large incision for access to the uterus and surrounding anatomy, has been the standard approach for many years, but is still necessary at times. However, it can be associated with increased pain and longer recovery time.
